Removal of Maduro is “welcome news,” Carney says after US capture

From Global News.

Speaking in Paris on Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Washington’s removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro – who he described “corrupt, repressive,” and a “illegitimate” leader, was “welcome news” over the weekend.

President Donald Trump ordered a large-scale military strike in and around Caracas on Saturday, which allowed for U.S. forces to depose Maduro and arraign he and his wife on multiple weapons and drugs charges in New York City on Monday.

Despite Venezuela swearing in Vice President Delcy Rodriquez as interim leader, Trump said his administration would “run” the South American nation until a “safe, judicious transition” was possible – noting that the U.S. would “fix” and tap into Venezuela’s oil reserves for the time being.

Asked if he thinks Trump’s plans will impact Canada’s oil sector, Carney noted that his government is “diversifying our markets,” emphasizing Ottawa’s “competitive product.”
