Schumer vs. Trump on protests in Iran and Minnesota

From PBS NewsHour.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday noted President Donald Trump’s concern for Iranian protesters caught in a deadly government crackdown and derision for protests in Minnesota since an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Renee Good in the head last week.

“It’s amazing,” Schumer said. “He’s concerned about the protesters in Iran, but not concerned about the damage that ICE is doing to the protesters and other Americans in Minnesota and other places.”

Asked if he foresees a new U.S. military intervention in Iran, the New York Democrat also criticized Trump’s actions for being “so far away” from what Americans really want.

On his way back to the White House after delivering a speech in Detroit, Trump told reporters on Tuesday that Iran was on his mind.

“Minnesota is going to have to take care of itself for a little while,” he said, before turning back to his concerns about Iran.

He said the killing of Iranian activists looked “significant” and “we’ll act accordingly.”

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported that more than 2,500 people have been killed in the current crackdown by Iranian security forces. On Wednesday, Trump offered, without further detail, that he had been told that Iran has stopped its plan for swift executions of detained protesters.

In Minnesota, federal immigration enforcement agents have deployed tear gas and, in at least one case, pulled someone from their car, as protests continue after Good’s death.
