The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 as a power struggle between two rival generals: General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese military, and his former right-hand man, Mohamed Daglo, chief of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Over two years later, explaining the bloodshed goes deeper than this feud. Ethnic massacres have been reported over and over, and regional experts have accused foreign actors of backing sides to control Sudan’s natural riches. So what is going on inside Sudan?
