Providence police on Sunday have detained a suspect in connection with the Brown University shooting that left two dead and nine injured. Local shelter-in-place orders have been lifted and authorities have not provided further details regarding the suspect as to protect the integrity of the investigation.
“I’m sorry to say we have thought about this,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said, “As we mentioned yesterday, we’ve all trained for this. This is not something we should have to train for, but we have."
Zoe Weissman, a student at Brown University who was in her dorm room during the lockdown, experienced the infamous Parkland shooting in 2018, where she attended a middle school across the road from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “I’m shocked but I’m not surprised.” The 20-year-old undergraduate said, “And I think that that’s probably a sentiment that a lot of students have here. It’s like obviously you never expect it to happen, but it’s not surprising because we see how often it happens.”
According to The Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as any incident that involves four or more victims shot, has tallied 389 so far this year in the U.S.
