Ahead of renewed negotiations with Iran, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said establishing a nuclear agreement with the nation could be difficult.
“Doing a deal with Iran is not easy,” Rubio told reporters in Budapest Monday. “We have to understand that Iran ultimately is governed and its decisions are governed by radical Shia clerics. These people make policy decisions on the basis of pure theology,” he added.
Among Israel and other European nations, the U.S. has repeatedly accused Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons, while Iran says its nuclear program is solely for peaceful energy purposes.
Last week, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed frustration with the “high wall of mistrust” shown by the U.S., saying that “Iran will not bow to their excessive demands.”
After previously threatening to strike U.S. bases in the Middle East if it is again attacked by U.S. forces, Iran took a conciliatory line Sunday.
