WATCH: Trump calls anti-ICE protesters ‘insurrectionists,’ says Renee Good’s death was ‘a tragedy’

From PBS NewsHour.

President Donald Trump referred to people opposed to his sweeping immigration crackdown as “insurrectionists” while also calling the shooting death of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis “a tragedy.”

“ICE is going to be too rough with somebody or, you know, they deal with rough people. Are they going to make a mistake? Sometimes. It can happen,” Trump told reporters Tuesday in the White House briefing room. “I felt horribly when I was told that the young woman who had the tragedy – it’s a tragedy. It’s a horrible thing. ICE would say the same thing.”

Trump then referenced Good’s father, Timothy Ganger, who CBS News reported was a supporter of the president. “He was all for Trump, loved Trump,” Trump said. “I hope he still feels that way, and it’s a hard situation.”

Good’s fatal shooting was captured on camera by bystanders in January, sparking widespread protests. In the initial aftermath of her death, the Trump administration called Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, a “domestic terrorist.” Last week, Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to put an end to protests in Minneapolis.

The president’s comments come as the Justice Department served six grand jury subpoenas to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her and officials in Ramsey and Hennepin counties, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The subpoenas are associated with an investigation into whether public statements made by Minnesota officials obstructed federal immigration enforcement, the AP reported.
