WATCH: Trump says he’s waiting ‘anxiously’ for Supreme Court tariff case ruling

From PBS NewsHour.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration is waiting “anxiously” for the Supreme Court’s ruling on a case involving his use of tariffs.

“I don’t know what the Supreme Court is going to do,” Trump told reporters in the White House briefing room. “We’ve taken in hundreds of billions of dollars, and if we lose that case, it’s possible we’re going to have to do the best we can in paying it back. I don’t know how that’s going to be done very easily without hurting a lot of people, but we’re waiting for that case anxiously.”

In November, the justices heard arguments in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, a case that centers on the president’s use of emergency powers under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs. Earlier last year, the administration said that both the flow of drugs and illegal immigration across the U.S. southern border were enough to justify tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China. Trump later said that longstanding trade deficits justified using the law to impose worldwide tariffs.

The president’s comments come as he is set to meet with world leaders this week at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He recently called for a 10% tariff on European countries who are rallying to support Denmark against his calls for a U.S. takeover of Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory.
