From Global News.
As violence continues and living conditions deteriorate on a mass scale this week, Alan Boswell – the International Crisis Group Project Director for the Horn of Africa – explains what’s behind the ongoing civil war in Sudan.
In short, Boswell details the worsening relationship between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group. Though the two parties shared power for several years – after overthrowing the long-time military dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir in 2019 –a power struggle erupted in 2023.
The divide has resulted in atrocities by the RSF and has created what the UN is calling the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, at a time when global aid budgets are shrinking.
Mass killings have been reported in the eastern city of al-Fashir since being overthrown by the RSF on Oct. 26. The United Nations has ordered citizens to flee while condemning the violence.
