US media say a man suspected of shooting and seriously wounding two National Guard soldiers near the White House was an Afghan who had served alongside US troops in his home country.

The White House called the incident an "act of terror" and said it was suspending immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals. The suspect arrived in the US four years ago.
