In The Gambia, a standoff between local fishers and foreign-owned trawlers has led to tensions and violence at sea. One local industry official called the growing number of incidents, a ‘sea war.’ Desperate Gambians are attacking foreign trawlers, and even turning on each other, over the waters off West Africa. The locals accuse the trawlers of tresspassing in unauthorized areas off Gambia’s coast – and sabotaging their equipment.
