Stellantis to invest $13B in US manufacturing, putting Ontario Jeep plant at risk

From Global News.

Canada’s auto sector is taking another hit as Stellantis says it’s shifting the production of its Jeep Compass from Brampton, Ont., to Illinois.

The surprise move will be part of a US$13-billion plan announced by the multinational automaker on Tuesday to expand U.S. production by 50 per cent over the next four years, according to Unifor.

This comes after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick last week revealed that the Trump administration’s goal is to end vehicle manufacturing in Canada altogether.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed disappointed in Stellantis’s decision and stood in “full solidarity” with Unifor and its members.

Unifor president Lana Payne says that saving the Brampton plant should be Canada’s top priority.
