From Global News.
Speaking at NATO’s Brussels headquarters on Wednesday, Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that the military alliance is now collaborating with the European Union (EU) to build a “drone wall” to protect member nations from enemy drone attacks.
Though the logistics and feasibility of a drone wall remain in flux, the announcement comes weeks after dozens of airspace violations by Russian drones – most notably in Poland – highlighting how ill-prepared the EU is for drone warfare.
Rutte expressed confidence that many other allied countries will be on board for the multinational air defence system, but time and financial feasibility could be an issue, according to Royal United Services Institute research fellow Robert Tollast.
“It’s not going to be an announcement like ‘We’ve now built the drone wall’. It’s going to be something that will take a number of years, because a lot of capabilities that might be the cheapest options don’t quite exist yet,” Tollast said.
Rutte, however, says that NATO would provide capabilities on the military side, while the EU would ensure the money was there.
