Kenyans across the country paid tribute to former prime minister and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday, who died in India due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 80.
In Kisumu and Nairobi’s Kibera neighbourhood, areas considered Odinga’s political strongholds, crowds marched through the streets waving twigs and chanting in remembrance.
“I have not even gone to work. I am still very shocked,” said Christine Okoth, a Kibera resident.
"It is a big loss, actually. I lack words to express how I feel because it is a big loss. Losing somebody as a father figure, a political icon, a pan-Africanist, it is a very big loss to the Luo Nation, to the entire world, and even to Africa," said Kenyan citizen Lawrence Oyange.
Odinga was a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades. He was known for his role in opposition movements, power-sharing agreements and efforts to calm post-election tensions. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and reflection across the country.
