President Donald Trump repeated his criticism Wednesday of the Justice Department under the Biden administration and special counsel Jack Smith, who brought indictments against Trump for his handling of classified documents and another for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Trump was responding to a question during his Oval Office appearance about the House Judiciary Committee’s demand that Smith testify before the panel.
Smith is “a deranged individual,” the president said. Referring to the House panel’s request to speak with Smith, he added, “They should. I’m surprised it takes so long. You know, we’re talking about violent crime. What about the crime against a political opponent? That’s what we have to talk about, too.”
The former special counsel moved to drop the cases against Trump weeks after his win in the 2024 presidential election.
Smith recently spoke in a rare interview about the Trump administration’s attacks on the justice system. “I think the attacks on public servants, particularly nonpartisan public servants — I think it has a cost for our country that is incalculable, and I think that we — it’s hard to communicate to folks how much that is going to cost us,” he told former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissman at University College London.
