Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced Monday that legislation for a new financial crime agency – to help better protect Canadians against fraud, financial scams and economic abuse – will be introduced in the spring.

On why the Liberal government plans to develop a brand-new agency rather than use a pre-existing one, Champagne emphasized it was necessary and that “fighting financial crime in the 21st century is something very complex.”

The reveal comes ahead of the reveal of the 2025 federal fall budget, which Champagne will present on Nov. 4.
