Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy began a five-year prison sentence on Tuesday for conspiring to raise campaign funds from Libya.

Going to prison will not "break" Sarkozy, his lawyer said on Tuesday, and added that an appeal to release him had already been filed.

His supporters insisted he was "not a criminal" and said they find him "very dignified in accepting to go, saying, well, that’s how it is, I respect the justice of my country… so hats off."

Sarkozy has consistently denied wrongdoing and has called the case politically motivated.
