Peru’s interim president José Jerí has declared a 30-day state of emergency for the capital Lima. It allows the government to send the army to patrol the streets and restrict freedom of assembly. The move comes after weeks of weeks of widespread protests that have turned violent at times. Demonstrators were demanding an end to corruption and organized crime in the country.
