Bail reform: Liberal to crack down on release of repeat offenders, add tougher sentencing | LIVE

From Global News.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Sean Fraser will hold a press conference on Thursday to introduce a new bill, the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act, to strengthen bail laws and toughen sentencing laws.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said last week the legislation would aim to crack down on violent crime and repeat offenders.

The new measures will include reverse-onus bail for major crimes, which means an accused would have to prove why they deserve to be let out.

The legislation will also include consecutive sentencing for major crimes and restrict conditional sentences for several sexual offences, Carney had said.
