Trump tariffs overshadowing ASEAN summit – why are Xi and Modi absent? | DW News

From DW News.

With Trump’s tariffs disrupting global trade and regional exports, many governments are eager to negotiate deals. US President Donald Trump is looking to bolster his image as a peacemaker in a long-running border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.

Trump is in Malaysia for a summit of Southeast Asian nations that’s being overshadowed by US trade tariffs. On his way to Kuala Lumpur, the US president stopped in Qatar the country’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on board Air Force One to discuss the Gaza peace deal. Leaders from countries including the new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi are gathering in Malaysia under the banner of the ASEAN bloc.
