Russia says it has successfully tested a nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, capable of evading any defence missile.

Valery Gerasimov, chief of the general staff of Russia’s armed forces, told President Vladimir Putin Sunday that the missile travelled 14,000 kilometres over a period of fifteen hours.

Russia says the 9M730 Burevestnik – dubbed the SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO – is “invincible” to missile defence systems, has an unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path.

Jeffrey Lewis, director of the non-proliferation program at Middlebury Institute, said Sunday that while Russia is “crazy enough” to build a nuclear-powered missile, they are not the only country that has that capability. He said the development is a sign of a “deepening nuclear arms race”
