World Series: Blue Jays 1 win away from title as Yesavage pitches 6-1 past Dodgers

From Global News.

The Toronto Blue Jays are just one win away from a World Series title after Trey Yesavage pitched them 6-1 past the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 Wednesday night.

Yesavage set a World Series record for a rookie with 12 strikeouts, breaking the previous record of 11 strikeouts set by Don Newcombe for the Dodgers in a 1-0 loss to the New York Yankees in the 1949 opener.

The 22-year-old, who began his season in April pitching to 327 fans in Class A, said he “got in the zone early” but acknowledge that he’s had a whirlwind season and, in a nod to Los Angeles, joked that “even Hollywood couldn’t have made it this good.”

The Jays opened Game 5 with the first-ever back-to-back home runs to start a game in World Series history Wednesday night, when Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. connected on the first and third pitches by Los Angeles Dodgers’ Blake Snell.

Toronto leads 3-2 in the best-of-seven matchup and will have a chance to dethrone the defending champions when the series resumes Friday night at the Rogers Centre. No team has won consecutive titles since the Yankees took three in a row from 1998-2000.
