Trump holds calls with leaders of Japan, China amid dispute over Taiwan

From Global News.

U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi shortly after speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump’s Tuesday conversations with the leaders came amid their growing feud over the sovereignty of Taiwan, and Japan’s stance on the issue.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said, "President Trump gave a brief explanation of the recent state of U.S.-China relations," adding that Trump told her they are "very close friends," and she "could call any time."

China’s foreign ministry said that the atmosphere of the call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping was "positive, friendly and constructive."

Meanwhile, Taiwan said that a "return" to China is not an option for the island’s 23 million people, adding that "Taiwan belongs to the world," after Jinping pressed his country’s sovereignty claims in a separate call with Trump.
