The green Islam movement is gaining a lot of traction in Indonesia, home to the largest Muslim population in the world. An increasing number of Indonesian imams are calling on the faithful to protect the environment. It all started in one of the largest Mosques in the world. The Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta is considered the first “ecological house of worship.”
Even the country’s religious leaders have joined the fight and have issued several fatwas, or religious rulings, that condemn the destruction of the environment and urge people to protect nature. But critics believe the movement focuses too much on individual responsibility, and fails to call out Indonesia’s mining industry, which has wreaked havoc on the country’s ecosystems.
