French farmers block roads over cattle culls due to lumpy skin disease

From Global News.

French farmers protested culls by authorities of cattle due to lumpy skin disease by blocking motorways with tractors on Tuesday throughout the country.

Farmer Guillaume Husson is still in disbelief a month after 18 of his cows were culled when one animal tested positive and showed symptoms for lumpy skin disease.

“On Nov. 12, I lost 18 cows out of my 46. One of my cows tested positive and was showing symptoms. This led to the slaughter of those 18 cows," he said.

Lumpy skin disease is a virus spread by insects that affects cattle and buffalo, causing blisters and reducing milk production. While not harmful to humans, it often results in trade restrictions and severe economic losses.
