Protesters sing the French national anthem at riot police during a farmers’ demonstration in Brussels against the EU’s planned trade deal with South American bloc Mercosur. At least 7,000 farmers staged a mostly peaceful march through the capital’s European quarter, but rowdy scenes erupted outside the European Parliament, where protesters set off fireworks and hurled potatoes, bottles and other objects at the police who responded with tear gas. Farmers from many EU countries are present at the union-led demonstration, including a large French contingent.
