The Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru has been uninhabited for centuries, yet it remains remarkably well preserved. The Spanish conquered Peru in the 16th century, but Machu Picchu was never found by them and was only introduced to the outside world in the early 20th century. Today, it attracts around 1.5 million visitors from all over the world every year.

The Incas built this masterpiece of architecture and engineering at an elevation of more than 2,400 meters in what is now Peru’s Andes, designing it to exist in harmony with nature.

The several hundred stone structures of Machu Picchu cover 10 hectares and have survived centuries of heavy rainfall and frequent landslides.
