Zohran Mamdani sworn in as New York City mayor in historic New Year’s Day ceremony

New York City ushered in the New Year with a new mayor as Zohran Mamdani took the oath of office at midnight Thursday.

The private swearing-in ceremony was held at the historic Old City Hall subway station, which has been closed to the public since 1945.

Later in the day, Mamdani was publicly inaugurated on the steps of City Hall, with remarks from Bernie Sanders.

Mamdani campaigned on cost-of-living issues, making affordability a central theme of his mayoral bid.
