British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday said that peace in Ukraine was closer than ever, though the “hardest yards are still ahead”. At a meeting of a group of nations dubbed the “Coalition of the Willing,” a group comprised of 35 countries committed to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, Starmer outlined the UK’s role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine should a ceasefire be reached.

In a statement, he said Britain would establish military forces in Ukraine after a peace agreement had been reached. Although lacking detail on specifics, he mentioned “the UK and France will establish military hubs across Ukraine and build protective facilities for weapons of military equipment to support Ukraine’s defensive needs.”

The British Prime Minister also said that the UK would participate with the U.S. in monitoring and verification of a ceasefire.
