Orthodox Christians across the globe take icy plunges to celebrate Epiphany

From Global News.

Christians across the world plunged into chilly waters on Tuesday to celebrate Epiphany, a traditional Orthodox Christian ritual that symbolizes spiritual cleansing while commemorating the baptism of Jesus.

In many places, divers attempt to retrieve a wooden cross, blessed and thrown into the water by a priest, which is believed to bring good luck for the year to those who retrieve it.

In Ukraine, participants say this year’s Epiphany tradition brings a chance to recharge and cope with the strain of nearly four years of war.
