Angela never imagined when she gave birth to her daughter at 33, she would also end up fighting for her life in an operating room that same week. An unexpected serious heart condition affecting her connective tissue would require multiple surgeries across several years.
That’s when her cardiac surgeon, Dr. Michael Chu, proposed a world-first — doing two procedures in a single surgery. “Part of her aorta had ruptured and caused the entire aorta to split into several layers," Dr. Chu said. "This would be a 10/10 in terms of how severe it is… Many people don’t survive the complications when the aorta ruptures.”
