Ex-China detainee Michael Kovrig warns Carney needs to be “very careful” dealing with China

From Global News.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is calling his trip to China the beginning of a "new era" after a decade of political tensions. After the detention of two Canadian nationals and recent trade disputes, the path towards diplomacy remains daunting.

A senior policy adviser with the International Crisis Group and former diplomat Michael Kovrig tell Global News how he thinks Carney can achieve the objectives of his visit to China.

Kovrig was detained by the Chinese government for three years on bogus espionage charges, but he believes, "talking to China is necessary."

How can Canada work with a country that has been previously hostile to it? Kovrig says, "very carefully, with a lot of safeguards."
