From Global News.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney detailed the “historic agreement” made with Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday on canola, tariffs, EVs and more during his two-day visit to Beijing.
The deal established gains for both nations within “five key areas”: clean energy, trade, multilateralism, public safety, and cultural ties.
Most notably, Carney agreed to reduce tariffs on a portion of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) in exchange for China – at least temporarily – dropping levies on canola products as early as March.
This “new era” marks progress in a strained relationship between Canada and China, after the multi-year trade dispute that began when the previous Liberal government, led by Justin Trudeau, levied EV tariffs to protect Canada’s auto sector.
China’s response? They hit Canada with 100 per cent tariffs on canola oil, peas and other products, as well as a 25 per cent duty on several pork and seafood products.
