Canada launches compensation program for banned assault-style firearms

Ottawa unveiled the next steps in its national gun buyback program on Saturday. As of Monday, Canadians will have roughly two months to declare their interest in turning in outlawed firearms in order to receive compensation.

Since 2020, the government has banned around 2500 assault-style firearms, saying they belong only on the battlefield and are not designed for hunting or sport.

But some gun owners and provinces are already trying to kibosh the scheme, arguing the buybacks won’t make Canada safer at all. Dan Spector reports.
