As U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies his push to control Greenland by threatening tariffs on European countries that don’t support his plan, European allies are discussing their options in response.

"An ally, a friend of 250 years, is considering using tariffs. We don’t like tariffs. But certainly we don’t like using tariffs as a geopolitical weapon. We don’t want tariffs to be weaponized," French finance minister Roland Lescure said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that Trump’s threat of tariffs against allies over Greenland is “completely wrong” and a trade war is in no one’s interest.

"We do not want this escalation. We do not want a trade dispute with the United States," Merz said. "But if we are confronted with tariffs that we consider unreasonable, then we are capable of responding," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday.
