President Donald Trump called Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado “a good woman” for giving him the Nobel Peace Prize medal that she received at the end of last year.
The president made the comments to reporters in the White House briefing room on Tuesday.
Last week, Machado said she presented the medal to Trump “as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom.”
In October, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Machado as the winner of the peace prize for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” Before the committee announcement, Trump publicly campaigned to receive the prize.
The Nobel committee said earlier this month that a prize “cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time.”
During his news conference with reporters on Tuesday, Trump criticized Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize, even though the Norwegian government is not responsible for choosing the award’s winner.
