Alberta ER doctors detail preventable deaths, “near misses”

From Global News.

Alberta ER doctors are sounding the alarm when it comes to the provincial health-care system. In a letter written to the provincial government, various anonymous doctors recall scenarios of “preventable deaths” and “near misses," in hopes that action is taken.

Paul Parks of the Alberta Medical Association describes health-care workers quitting their jobs due to being overwhelmed and underfunded, saying, “Many are leaving emergency saying ‘I can’t do it anymore’ and we have to put a stop that.”

Meanwhile, the Alberta NDP are calling on the government to declare a state of emergency for Alberta’s emergency rooms and reconvene the legislature. NDP leader Naheed Nenshi said, “The government hasn’t acknowledged that this is an emergency. The answers we get from one of the four health ministers is very much, ‘Oh, this is business as usual, tinker a little on the edges, we’ll do a little bit here and there’.”
