From Global News.
While glioblastoma remains incurable at the moment, a new study has found a way to potentially give patients a bit more time. Research from scientists at McMaster University in Hamilton and Sick Kids in Toronto has discovered certain brain cells help this type of tumour grow and spread.
Dr. Sheila Singh, co-author of the study, said, “These normal, healthy brain cells are conscribed by the brain tumour into participating in helping the brain tumour to invade into the brain, and we found a way to block this communication between the normal cells and the glioblastoma cells with a drug that is already FDA-approved for another clinical indication.” That drug is an existing HIV medication.
The current research involves human tissue that has been implanted into immunocompromised animal models. Researchers say next steps include applications to Health Canada to see if the HIV drug can be approved for other uses and moving forward with clinical trials.
