Every year, our family travels to Aichi to spend New Year’s with Maiko’s parents and celebrate Oshōgatsu. Like Christmas in the West, it’s customary in Japan to return to your hometown and be with family on December 31, known as Oomisoka. This year, we headed out a day early on the 30th, easing into the quiet rhythm of being back. Wolfy is always excited to visit jiji and baba, but when he first sees them, he’s still a little shy. This time, though, I noticed how much more comfortable he felt in the house and how much easier it was for him to express himself. Every year it hits me how fast he’s growing, and moments like this make me want to slow everything down. There’s nothing to rush, nowhere to be, just time to breathe and enjoy being together. Even if he doesn’t fully understand it yet, I’m grateful we can share these simple moments as a family.
