Carney responds to Trump’s 100% tariff threat, says China deal consistent with CUSMA

From Global News.

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded Sunday to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports to the U.S. over Canada’s new trade relationships with China.

Speaking in Ottawa, Carney said the Canadian government was focused on protecting Canadians, "protecting our border, protecting our way of life and supporting Canadians."

He also said that Canada has trade commitments to the United States and Mexico under CUSMCA and that Canadians "respect our engagements, our commitments."

He added that Canada’s new electric vehicles agreement with China, part of larger talks to increase trade and investment, was entirely consistent with CUSMA.

Canada is not pursuing free trade agreements with China and has no intention of doing that, Carney said. "What we’ve done is to rectify some issues that developed in the last couple of years."
