French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal receives a Medal of Honour from the City of Strasbourg from Mayor Jeanne Barseghian, two months after his release from prison in Algeria. Imprisoned for nearly a year for statements he made about his native country, Sansal, 81, regained his freedom on 12 November 2025 after being pardoned by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. In 2015, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Roman de l’Académie Française, one of the oldest and most prestigious literary awards in France, for "2084," inspired by George Orwell’s masterpiece "1984", jointly with Franco-Tunisian author Hédi Kaddour.
