The U.S.-based Bulletin of Atomic Scientists will announce the location of the minute hand on its closely watched Doomsday Clock on Tuesday, indicating what world developments mean for the perceived likelihood of nuclear catastrophe and how close humanity is to self-destruction.

Last year, scientists unveiled the clock at 89 seconds to midnight, the closest to existential catastrophe it has ever been before. The reason? Insufficient progress on global challenges such as nuclear risk, climate change, biological threats and advances in disruptive technologies — all exacerbated by misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy theories.
