U.S. Border Patrol is "untrained and unskilled" for policing in urban areas, says former U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske.
"They don’t have that kind of experience and background and training to work in an environment that can actually become a bit hostile," he said. "City police officers know how to handle those things. It’s very obvious that ICE and the Border Patrol do not."
Kerlikowske spoke to PBS News Hour’s Amna Nawaz on Monday about the tactics used by federal immigration agents following the second deadly shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in Minnesota this month.
The shootings of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti by a Border Patrol agent on Saturday have sparked widespread outrage and protests over the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
President Donald Trump shifted his response on Monday, saying he and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz had a "very good call" and "seemed to be on a similar wavelength."
Trump also said border czar Tom Homan would travel to Minnesota amid anger there over the conduct of ICE and Border Patrol. On Tuesday, Homan met with Walz.
Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino and some of his agents are also expected to leave the state on Tuesday.
