“I’m not above taking credit”: Carney jokes he stood up to US, “greenlit” ‘Heated Rivalry’

From Global News.

Invited to a gala celebrating the smash hit 2025 Canadian TV series ‘Heated Rivalry’ on Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a congratulatory speech to the series’ creators and cast.

Carney commended ‘Heated Rivalry’ director Jacob Tierney and author Rachel Reid – who penned the ‘Game Changers’ novels on which the series is based – for opting to produce the show in Canada, despite greater opportunities in the U.S.

“I’m a politician, I’m not above taking credit for the Canadian funding that helped you share this story with the world,” Carney joked. “I greenlit this thing. I stood up to the Americans."

Carney even shared a moment with one of the show’s co-lead actors, Hudson Williams – who he has since called his “best friend.” On the red carpet, Williams draped his character’s jacket over Carney’s shoulders, before the two embraced and posed in photos together.
