Nipah virus risk “considered low” with no sign of spread: WHO

From Global News.

On Friday, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said that the risk of the spread of the Nipah virus is low and that none of the over 190 contacts of the two infected people in India had developed symptoms, or tested positive for the disease.

Anais Legand, a representative of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, said, “there is no specific evidence that would make us worry for the time being, and based on the information that we have.”

Commonly carried by fruit bats and farm animals such as pigs, the Nipah virus can cause fever and brain inflammation. The fatality rate ranges from 40 per cent to 75 per cent and currently has no cure; although vaccines in development are undergoing testing.
