From DW Documentary.
Turkey’s Sea of Marmara is facing a hidden threat, a kind of slime known as “sea snot”. It is the smallest sea in the world, and is located between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, working as a major transit hub. In 2021, the slime covered most of the sea’s surface. This foul-smelling, gelatinous substance is algae overgrowth caused by rising temperatures, limited water circulation, and industrial and domestic waste. It acts like a plastic wrap over the water, preventing oxygen from passing through, which can suffocate fish and other marine life. Today, the algal slime is also found underwater. Experts warn that if concrete solutions are not taken, it could be a matter of time before this sea faces another collapse like in 2021.
