A migrant boat capsized and sank following a collision with a Greek coast guard vessel near the island of Chios late Tuesday evening. At least 15 people have died while 25 were rescued.

According to a statement from the coast guard, the eight-metre migrant boat sailing toward Chios was overcrowded with at least 39 passengers and switched off its navigation lights. It then collided with a coast guard patrol boat, causing it to capsize, sink and eject all its passengers into sea; none of which wore lifejackets.

Greece has received criticism in recent years due to its treatment of migrants at sea, including a shipwreck in 2023 that resulted in hundreds of migrants killed.
