OpenAI, the American company behind ChatGPT said that Tumbler Ridge, B.C., shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar’s account was detected — by automated tools and human investigations — misusing the AI model ‘in furtherance of violent activities.’ Rootselaar’s account was banned in June, but didn’t meet the threshold to be referred to law enforcement. OpenAI said it reached out to RCMP after the shooting.
