California’s Housing Crisis Has Turned RVs Into Rental Properties

From CNBC.

As the Bay Area’s housing shortage intensifies vehicle-based homelessness has more than doubled since 2019, forcing even full-time workers into makeshift homes on wheels. This desperation has fueled a predatory shadow market where "vanlords" rent out aging RVs to those with no other options. While cities crack down on street encampments and ban these illegal rentals, San Jose is testing a different path with the Berryessa Safe Parking site, one of California’s largest sanctioned lots with space for 86 RVs. CNBC’s Kate Rogers visits the site to explore how these communities provide a vital bridge to long-term housing.
