Charges have been withdrawn against a man accused of assaulting an alleged home intruder in Lindsay, Ont., last August.

The case generated widespread interest at the time, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford saying the decision to charge the man showed “something is broken” in the justice system.

Prosectors now say there is evidence supporting a claim of self defence and that there was “no longer a responsible prospect of conviction.”
