Two Edmonton families say they’ve been stranded in Puerto Vallarta since Sunday after a military operation targeting a cartel leader triggered violence and widespread airport closures.

“Violence happened, flights were cancelled, roads were closed, airports shut down and we’ve been stuck here ever since,” said Edmonton traveller John Wywrot.

WestJet says it has added 12 additional flights to accommodate returning guests and is looking at options to add more depending on demand.
